A Giant Leap Forward….. for the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre

lclc_logoA Giant Leap Forward! The long awaited Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre (LCLC) will become a reality.

This great announcement today by the Government of Canada provides a major funding contribution of $10,350,000 which ensures that this multipurpose centre will provide a foundation for health, wellness, culture, recreation, competitive sport, social, economic and educational opportunities in Lunenburg County.

“This is a proud day for the volunteer board of directors and resource team members who have worked tirelessly, always with a positive outlook, to see the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre built in the county?, said Paul Belliveau, Chair, Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre Society Board of Directors.

“Gerald Keddy, MP, South Shore - St. Margaret’s, deserves recognition and thanks for his dedication to this project. He has taken the value of this project to Capital Hill and to anyone who would listen. He has left no stone unturned in helping our team work toward this project?, added Mr. Belliveau. We also thank the Honourable Peter McKay and the Honourable John Baird for their support of the LCLC project.

Mr. Keddy said, “I am pleased and proud to make this announcement today on behalf of the Government of Canada. In addition to the many benefits which this facility will provide, there will be an immediate economic stimulus as the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre is being constructed.?

In a joint statement, Mayor Carroll Publicover and Mayor Don Downe said, “The cooperation by the Town of Bridgewater and the Municipality of District of Lunenburg helped bring the project this distance and both municipalities are extremely excited to help make this an exemplary and impressive facility. Both mayors also said, “People in Lunenburg County have been solidly behind this project and will be extremely proud of the facility and will enjoy all it has to offer?.

This project will now go into high gear. Although solid planning is in place, much remains to be done. Diamond and Schmitt Architects in partnership with Lydon Lynch Architects have been selected to design the multipurpose recreation and lifestyle centre. These multi-disciplined companies bring an impressive array of project experience to the South Shore.

The Town of Bridgewater and the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg have committed millions of dollars to this project. The Government of Nova Scotia approved a major contribution of $10,000,000. The then Minister Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, MLA and the late Minister Michael Baker, MLA played an important role in helping deliver the ten million dollar commitment. Paul Belliveau said, “The LCLC Society Board and the project have received excellent support and encouragement from Gary Ramey, MLA – Lunenburg West and Pam Birdsall, MLA – Lunenburg.

“There is no time to rest now?, said Mr. Belliveau. “Community members will have a chance to show their support as we work to raise private sector money,? he added.

Mr. Belliveau said, “We are extremely pleased with the selection of the fundraising firm, RBR Development Associates Limited to assist with raising a portion of this money.? “RBR brings solid credentials to this project?, he added.

RBR has a presence in Lunenburg County and have established a local office in the area. “Much planning is taking place prior to the launch of the capital fundraising campaign.? said Mr. Belliveau. Michael K. Power, QC, is chair of the capital campaign in support of our Lifestyle Centre. We will provide more information as the campaign progresses.

The goal is to construct a facility containing two ice surfaces with seating, an aquatic centre, a public library, active living areas, as well as community and cultural spaces. The design team will be contracted to begin work within a few weeks. This work will result in fine-tuning projected costs for the entire project. The Centre will be located on York Street, near the Centennial Trail in Bridgewater. It is expected that the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre will be completed in 2012.
