The Bridgewater Development Association (BDA) has formed a new Action Team ‘The Collaborative Health Centre (CHC) Action Team.

“It is through Action Teams like this that the BDA carries out its work,” said Michelle Crouse, Chair of the Bridgewater Development Association. “I am encouraged by the work this team has done already and look forward to seeing results.”

The purpose of the Collaborative Health Centre Action Team is to work closely with community groups toward creating a Health Centre in the Bridgewater area.  The Action Team includes representatives from the business community, BDA Board of Directors, municipal government, physicians, and South Shore Health. A Collaborative Health Centre will provide space and technology for doctors and other health practitioners to deliver comprehensive health care services to a larger population.  It will give doctors and other health care professionals a means to work as a team with others.  Having a Collaborative Health Centre would be a great drawing card to attract doctors and other health care professionals to the area.

The initial work of the Action Team has been to research various models across Nova Scotia and throughout Canada in order to help make a decision about the type of model that would best address the needs of the community. The three models explored by the Action Team were private, community based and government funded and operated.

“The CHC Action Team has decided to pursue the Private Model, and will move ahead with its work of achieving this goal as quickly as possible,” explained Darren Lipsett, as Chair of the Collaborative Health Centre Action (CHC) Team.

This team is very dedicated to ensuring that a Collaborative Health Centre becomes a reality in the Bridgewater area.

“As we move through this process, we will seek help from the community since having a Collaborative Health Centre in the area will be to everyone’s benefit.  It will benefit new workers coming to the area, it will benefit families in the area, especially those that do not presently have a family physician,” commented Lipsett. “We want this to be a community driven project,” he concluded.

With a Private Model a developer builds the building and those providing services within the building pay an overhead fee, which includes operating costs and the management of the centre. This model would provide a turn key operation for doctors and health professionals, which is estimated to be less expensive than setting up an individual private practice.

“Collaborative Health Centres provide what doctors are seeking – an opportunity to work as a team with other health practitioners, a top of the line facility, low overhead for start up in a new area and opportunities for work/life balance,” explained South Shore Health’s Dr. Peter Vaughan.

“Having excellent health care is an economic generator.  It can attract new residents and new business,” said Ida Scott, Manager of the BDA. “Bridgewater and the surrounding area offer much to practitioners who move here in quality of life, which can contribute to the work/life balance they may seek.”
