Bridgewater was incorporated on February 13, 1899. An elected council consisting of a Mayor and six (6) Councillors oversees the affairs of the Town of Bridgewater. They work with several Committees of Council, which include representatives from the community. A Town Manager co-ordinates the daily operations of the Town.

logo-policeConsists of a Chief of Police, four Sergeants, eleven full time constables and a two member Criminal Investigation Section, two part –time constables and a full-time Special Constable (by-laws and meters). The Department also employs four full-time Communications Technicians and two Auxiliary Constables.

Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department

logo-fire-deptThe Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department serves the Town and surrounding communities through a 24-hour paging alarm system. Services include Mutual Aid, public education, fire prevention, fire suppression, vehicle extraction, cold water rescue other emergency services. The Firemen’s Band is the longest standing Fireman’s Band in Canada and the Ladies Auxiliary plays a key role in support of the fire fighters.

Bridgewater and the whole of Lunenburg County are "green" communities with four stream recycling of all commercial and residential refuse. Basic collection in Bridgewater is included in the tax base.
 

Sustainable Bridgewater

Sustainable BridgewaterThe Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) sets a long-term vision for Bridgewater as a "sustainable community", and outlines the goals, strategies, and actions that our community can take to achieve it. Completed in March 2010, it will act as a guide for Town of Bridgewater initiatives for approximately 5-7 years, when it will need to be updated. Its 6 key topic areas are energy, food, transportation, the economy, municipal infrastructure, and education for sustainability.
